Use the Right Cutting Tool for the Task

Using the wrong tool has the potential to result in a serious injury. When opening packages, cutting straps, and slicing hoses, wires, or belts, be sure you are using the proper tool and method.

Before choosing a tool, always use a Take 5 to help you decide which one to use. Here are some questions you should ask:

  • Does my task involve cutting or slicing?

    • Could you cut yourself or a coworker, or slip while completing the cut? 

    • Does the cut require a lot of force or difficulty?

  • What is the safest way to complete the cutting task?

    • How do I make sure everyone (including myself) is clear?

    • What is the right tool? Open blades or utility knives are rarely the only or best option. If you do use one, be sure to use only automatic self-retracting knives.
