Using the Correct Cutting Tool

Selecting the proper cutting tool for your task is essential for protecting your hands and reducing injury at work or home.

It is important to assess each task and make PPE selections based on the potential hazards associated with the particular job. If you are unsure which cutting tool to use, please ask your supervisor or a safety team member.

Using the wrong cutting tool has resulted in cuts from:

  • Drawing a blade or tool toward yourself rather than away

  • Selecting the wrong tool for the task

  • Failing to wear the appropriate gloves

  • Using a dull blade that requires a lot of force

  • Slipping while completing a cut

Energy Isolation Protocols

When machinery and other equipment require maintenance or repairs, turning them off is not enough to eliminate the power source. We have Energy Isolation Protocols in place to safeguard employees from the release of hazardous energy from equipment. Any piece of equipment, whether it’s at work or an appliance at home, has an energy source. Controlling hazardous energy includes isolating the system from both its primary power source and any stored energy in the system.

Before any service, repair, or maintenance tasks:

  • Conduct a Take 5 to identify tasks and risks

  • Check for existing Energy Control Procedure

  • If no ECP or non-routine work, perform a work hazard assessment

All on-site employees should be trained on our LOTOTO/Energy Isolation Protocols.
