Why Vehicle Segregation Matters
Supporting Vehicle Segregation Protocol
Vehicles are critical to our daily operations, but they also pose significant risks. More than 40% of industry fatalities involve vehicles, making effective vehicle segregation essential to workplace safety.
Without proper controls, vehicle-related incidents can include collisions and rollovers, struck pedestrians, or contact with overhead power lines.
To reduce these risks, all NAM sites maintain a Vehicle Segregation Plan (VSP) based on site-specific risk assessments, effective controls, and regular reviews.
A successful VSP depends on:
Safe, well-maintained vehicles
Properly maintained roads, berms, barricades, and signage
Safety resources such as radios, cones, and warning lights
Consistent use of safe operating practices and communication procedures
Effective vehicle segregation keeps people and equipment separate, reducing risk and creating a safer workplace for everyone.

A backup gas cooler was purchased and planned for on-site storage in a laydown area at the Cape Fear STAR® site. This laydown area is directly beside a stormwater pond where analytical stormwater monitoring is performed. The site’s stormwater permit requires testing for Total Suspended Solids, Chemical Oxygen Demand, Non-Polar Oil and Grease, Copper, Lead, and Zinc. The gas cooler is predominantly made of zinc and may leach zinc when exposed to stormwater, which would increase zinc levels in the pond and cause the site to exceed its stormwater benchmarks.
The site covered the gas cooler to prevent stormwater exposure and zinc leaching from the equipment. This good catch prevents the site from potentially exceeding its benchmark limits and having to complete a Tier One Response to the State.
