Access to Site & Security
Supporting Our Vehicle Segregation Protocol
Controlling access to operational sites is a critical part of every Vehicle Segregation Plan (VSP). Effective site security helps prevent unauthorized individuals from entering areas where they may be exposed to moving vehicles, heavy equipment, and other operational hazards.
Key access and security practices include:
Using clear signage to identify authorized access points, restricted areas, and site safety requirements.
Implementing automated barrier controls to manage vehicle and pedestrian entry.
Utilizing personnel-controlled access points, such as security stations or weighbridges, to monitor site entry and exit.
Establishing visitor procedures for vendors, delivery drivers, contractors, and guests.
Communicating approved travel routes and restricted areas through signage, site inductions, and access-control processes.
By controlling site access and clearly communicating expectations, facilities can reduce risk, improve traffic flow, and help ensure everyone remains in designated safe areas while operations are underway.

Best Practice
Submitted: Alex McArthur on behalf of Matt Bowen
Location: Athens, GA
Situation: Best Practice
Athens, like many sites, experiences significant employee turnover. Currently, 50% of Athens employees have less than two years of experience. New hires need time to become familiar with the plant, whether that’s the names of screens or crushers or the settings for a given operating mode. Labeling screens and crushers with their names, media opening/closing side settings, and the LOTOTO bucket in the MCC simplifies communication and helps new hires avoid mistakes in plant setup or energy isolation.
