Parking Safety
Supporting Our Vehicle Segregation Protocol
Safe parking practices are an important part of every Vehicle Segregation Plan (VSP). Well-designed parking areas help reduce vehicle interactions, improve visibility, and keep people separated from operational hazards.
Key parking safety practices include:
Using First Move Forward parking whenever possible to reduce backing incidents.
Maintaining level, hazard-free surfaces for safe entry and exit from vehicles.
Providing designated parking areas for operational vehicles, heavy equipment, and personal vehicles.
Ensuring heavy equipment parking includes proper spacing, barriers, and stop blocks when backing in.
Locating personal vehicle parking outside operational areas, with clear separation and barricades where feasible.
Never parking personal vehicles within active operational zones.
By following these practices, sites can reduce risk, improve traffic flow, and create a safer environment for employees, contractors, and visitors. Safe parking is more than convenience. It is a critical control that supports effective vehicle segregation and workplace safety.

September Good Catch Winners 🥇
🥇 Health & Safety
Congratulations, Jake Horton & Derrick Louallen!
Location: Jefferson, South Carolina
Situation: Excellence in Safety Practice/Procedure
While operating the secondary plant at first light, the operator noticed smoke coming from the back of one of the main transformers feeding the MCC. Management was notified immediately, and the area was blocked off.
The local power cooperative arrived within 30 minutes; they replaced the burned wires, and operations resumed. The plant has segregated the parking area with concrete barriers.
🥇 Environmental
Congratulations, Jordie Promislow & Kyle Hamilton!
Location: Moncure, NC
Situation: Excellence in Environmental Practice/Procedure
A backup gas cooler was scheduled for storage near a stormwater monitoring pond. Recognizing the potential for zinc leaching, the site covered the equipment to prevent stormwater exposure and reduce environmental compliance risk.
🥇 Best Practice
Congratulations, Tommy Burbage!
Location: Lexington, SC
Situation: Best Practice
Assembled a trailer with hands-on training simulations for fly ash operations (flange alignment, butterfly installation, belt alignment, and bin vent and baghouse cleaning). These exercises and simulations train individuals on proper practices and equip them with the knowledge to handle situations if something goes wrong. Future plans: install a television for presentation material to accompany training sessions and air conditioning for warmer months.
🥇 Community Engagement
Congratulations, Anderson Quarry!
Location: Anderson, SC
The quarry hosted 20 Girl Scouts for an engaging, hands-on STEM experience focused on sustainability and environmental stewardship. The scouts planted nearly 300 trees, toured the quarry, enjoyed lunch, and learned about forestry, geology, and the aggregates industry. To cap off the day, they earned their STEM badges while gaining a deeper understanding of environmental responsibility and natural resource management.
